Tenth-inning heroics lift Lawrence to split with Beloit

APPLETON, Wis. -- Ben Webster delivered a run-scoring double in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the Lawrence University baseball team to an 8-7 win over Beloit College in the second game of a Midwest Conference doubleheader Sunday at Whiting Field. Beloit won the opener 6-0.

Luke Kostreva picked up his first win of the season with 1.2 innings of one-hit relief. Webster went 4-for-5 with a pair of runs batted in in the second game.

Lawrence (5-12, 1-5 MWC) trailed 5-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth when the Vikings struck for four runs. Lawrence took advantage of two walks, a hit batsman, and a balk in the inning. Tommy Schmidt and Tim Salm both had run-scoring singles in the inning, as Lawrence grabbed a 7-5 lead.

The Buccaneers got single runs in the eighth and ninth off Lawrence starter Alex Fritsch to tie the game at 7-7. Kostreva entered into a bases-loaded jam with one out ninth, but he struck out Stacy Bruner and got Matt Bartz to hit into a fielder's choice to end the threat.

Lawrence then won it in the 10th off reliever Chris Welborn, who allowed six hits in 4.1 innings. Wes Otte started the rally with a one-out single through the right side. After a strikeout, Webster hit a rocket to center field to score Otte with the game-winner.

Salm went 3-for-5 in the nightcap, and Otte and Schmidt had two hits apiece in Lawrence's 14-hit attack. Dan Edwards led Beloit by going 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs.

In the opener, Rick Krajewski went the distance and allowed only four hits to pick up the win. He struck out three and didn't walk a batter.

Beloit got all the offense it would need by scoring a pair of unearned runs against Lawrence starter Andy Frelich in the first inning. Frelich allowed four runs, including two earned, in seven innings.

Hunter Nelson paced Beloit by going 3-for-5 in the opener. Hawk Haiduke had two of Lawrence's four hits.

The same two teams will meet Monday at Pohlman Field in Beloit for a doubleheader to complete the four-game series.
