MENOMONIE, Wis. -- The Lawrence University baseball team dropped a nonconference doubleheader at UW-Stout on Tuesday by the scores of 8-1 and 8-5.
In the opener, the Vikings (4-11) trailed 2-1 after Ben Webster's run-scoring double in the third inning got Lawrence on the board.
Stout got that run back in the bottom of the third and then broke the game open with four runs in the fifth off Lawrence starter Andy Frelich. Greg Smolinski, David Larson, and Ben Bengston all had run-scoring doubles in the decisive fifth inning.
Steve Soukup pitched five innings, allowing five hits, to pick up the win. Tommy Schmidt had two of Lawrence's six hits in the opener.
In the nightcap, the Blue Devils (11-16) jumped out to an 8-1 lead through five innings before Lawrence rallied for four runs in the sixth.
The bases were loaded when Andy Bremberger walked to force in a run. Matt Frelich then reached on an error and that allowed two more runs to score. Webster later followed with a run-scoring single, and the Vikings trailed 8-5.
Mike White shut the Vikings down in the seventh to preserve the win for reliever Andy Lorenzen. Alex Fritsch allowed eight hits over four innings and took the loss.
Ben Konetzke and Hawk Haiduke both had two hits to pace the Lawrence offense in the nightcap.
Lawrence returns to action Saturday when it travels to Beloit College for a Midwest Conference doubleheader.
