Lawrence sweeps doubleheader from Finlandia

APPLETON, Wis. -- Brad Hauser drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth in the first game and then pitched a complete game for the win in the nightcap, as the Lawrence University baseball team beat Finlandia University 9-8 and 4-3 on Sunday at Don Hawkins Field.

In the opener, Lawrence (4-11) built a 5-2 lead after two innings before Finlandia (2-12) rallied to take a 6-5 lead in the top of the fourth.

Ben Webster and Luke Kostreva both had run-scoring singles in the bottom of the fourth, as the Vikings retook the lead at 7-6. Finlandia came back in the top of the sixth with two more runs for an 8-7 advantage.

The Vikings rallied in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score at 8-8 on Adam Fritsch's sacrifice fly with the bases loaded.

Lawrence won it in the bottom of the ninth when Tim O'Toole started a rally with a two-out walk. He then stole second, and Hauser followed with a single to center field to score O'Toole.

Hawk Haiduke went 3-for-4 to pace the Vikings in the opener, and Hauser, O'Toole and Ben Webster all had two hits.

Alex Fritsch pitched four innings of one-hit relief to even his record on the season at 1-1. He struck out three and walked one.

In the nightcap, Hauser pitched all seven innings to pick up his first win of the season. He allowed eight hits, struck out seven and walked two.

The Lions had built a 3-1 lead after scoring two runs in the top of the fifth, but the Vikings rallied in the bottom half of the inning.

With two outs, O'Toole doubled to leftcenter and Wes Otte followed with a double to score O'Toole and trim the lead to 3-2. Webster then singled up the middle to score Otte and tie the game at 3-3. After a walk to Frank Forseth, Adam Fritsch, who went 2-for-3 in the second game, singled to center field to score Webster and put the Vikings up 4-3.

Hauser gave up only one hit in the final two innings to nail down the win.

Lawrence, which has now won three of its last four games, returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts UW-Stout in a nonconference doubleheader at Whiting Field.
