APPLETON, Wis. -- A short but intense snowstorm dumped several inches of snow
on Whiting Field and halted Monday's Lawrence University-Beloit College baseball
doubleheader.
The teams were tied 3-3 in the top of the 11th of the first game when play was stopped just after 4:00 p.m. Beloit will have to return to Lawrence to finish the first game and play the second game of the doubleheader. No date has been set to complete the doubleheader.
Beloit took a 1-0 lead in the first when Eric Stall reached on an error and moved to second when Josh Conway's tailor-made double-play ground ball deflected off the umpire. After a passed ball moved both runners up, Stall scored on Ryan Whitcomb's ground out.
Lawrence tied the game in the bottom of the third. Evan Neuens reached on an infield single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt, and moved to third on a wild pitch. He then scored on Bryan Rosen's ground out.
The Vikings then grabbed the lead in the bottom of the fourth. With two on and one out, Frank Forseth doubled off the left field wall to score Adam Fritsch, but Brad Hauser was thrown out at the plate.
Beloit scored single runs in the fifth and sixth to take a 3-2 lead. Nick Severson
walked to lead off the fifth and later scored on Conway's double. In the sixth,
Phillip Roscoe led off the inning with a double and Ryan Schmitz followed with
a single to right. Roscoe moved to third and was able to score when the ball
got under Rosen's glove. The Bucs later loaded the bases, but Al Fritsch, on
in relief of Hauser, struck out Stall and got Conway to fly out to end the threat.
Lawrence tied it at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh. Neuens reached on a fielder's choice and scored when Tim O'Toole tripled down the right field line.
The Vikings return to action on Friday when they host UW-La Crosse in a doubleheader at Fox Cities Stadium.
