Lawrence rallies for doubleheader split with Dubuque

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University baseball team had to come back twice to earn a split of a nonconference doubleheader on Tuesday with the University of Dubuque.

The Vikings (5-10) took the nightcap 15-14 after Dubuque (6-16) won the opener 10-6.

Jordan Clark went 4-for-5 and drove in two runs in the nightcap, and Robert Rashid went 2-for-3 and drove in a team-high three runs. Aaron Leitner pitched 4.1 innings of relief to pick up the victory.

Lawrence trailed 9-4 in the nightcap before the Vikings struck for nine runs in the bottom of the fourth. Lawrence sent 14 men to the plate in the inning and scored the nine runs on six hits. Clark had two hits in the inning and drove in two runs, and Andy Frelich had a big two-run double.

Dubuque rallied for three runs in the fifth and then took a 14-13 lead with two runs in the top of the sixth.

The Vikings came back to take the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth. Hawk Haiduke singled and Eric Bohling followed with a double to put runners at second and third with no outs. After a ground out, Rashid smashed a two-run single off the glove of a diving Chris Hylland to give Lawrence a 15-14 edge.

Leitner then retired the side in order in the top of the seventh to seal the win.

In the opening game, Dubuque jumped out to a 10-1 lead after four innings.

The Vikings rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth, with two scoring on Frank Forseth's double. Lawrence scored two more times in the seventh before Blayke Conway escaped the jam to preserve the victory.

Jordan Skaar pitched six inning, allowing 10 hits and six runs, to pick up the win. Alex Fritsch pitched three innings and took the loss.

Alexander Larson had a team-high three hits in the opener for Dubuque and Jeffrey Stevens drove in four runs.

Rashid, Frelich, Forseth, and Nick Pedretti all had two hits for the Vikings in the opener.
