RIPON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University baseball team got a pair of superb pitching performances and picked up a Midwest Conference split at Ripon College on Thursday.
The Vikings won the opener 4-1 and Ripon took the nightcap 2-0.
Frank Forseth went the distance in the opener, allowing five hits while striking out seven and walking none. Wes Otte sparked the offense in the first game by going 3-for-4.
Andy Frelich gave Lawrence (4-7, 1-1 MWC) the lead with a homer to lead off the fourth inning. The Vikings made it 2-0 in the seventh on Jordan Clark's run-scoring single.
Ripon cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh, but Lawrence responded with two runs in the eighth. Otte and Eric Bohling both had run-scoring singles in the inning.
Forseth then retired the Red Hawks in order in the eighth and ninth to seal the win.
Aaron Leitner gave up only five hits in the nightcap, but Ripon's Matt Dwyer was just as good. He allowed only three hits to pick up the shutout. Dwyer struck out seven and walked two.
Ripon (4-8, 1-1) scored twice in the first on run-scoring singles by John Henrickson and Kurt Roeder for all the offense they would get.
Leitner faced only one batter over the minimum the rest of the way.
Lawrence faces Ripon Saturday for the final two games of the series at Don Hawkins Field at 1:00 p.m.
