Colby pulls away from Vikings

PHOENIX, Ariz. -- The Colby College baseball team broke open a close game in the late innings on Wednesday and pulled away for a 13-5 nonconference win over Lawrence University.

Colby led 5-3 before scoring three times in the bottom of the seventh and adding five more runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Ray Tucker and Ben Webster paced the Lawrence offense with three hits apiece. T.J. Frett, Robert Rashid, and Doug McEneaney all had two hits for the Vikings (2-4).

Lawrence starter Frank Forseth gave up three runs in the bottom of the first and another run in the second, but the Vikings battled back with single runs in the second, third, and fourth innings. Tucker had a run-scoring single in the second, Tim Salm added a RBI double in the third, and Tucker had another run-scoring single in the fourth.

Colby tacked on another run in the sixth, and the Mules scored three times in the seventh on only two hits but took advantage of an error, hit batsman, and a walk.

Lawrence cut the lead to 8-5 with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth. The Vikings had four hits in the frame, with Frett and Wes Otte both hammering run-scoring singles.

Colby then put the game away with five runs in the eighth. The Mules had five hits in the inning, including Nick Spillane's two-run double.

Tim Brettingen picked up the win despite allowing 14 hits in 7.1 innings.

Lawrence wraps up its spring break trip on Thursday with a doubleheader against Thomas College.
