Guilford slams Lawrence

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Joe John hit two homers, including a grand slam, in Guilford College's 17-7 win over the Lawrence University baseball team on Thursday.

Lawrence fell to 0-6 on the season, and Guilford, which hit five homers on the day, snapped a 12-game losing streak.

The Vikings led 2-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth when the Quakers loaded the bases with two outs with the help of a fielding error. John then hit the grand slam to put Guilford up 5-2. Drew Ward then followed with a solo blast for a 6-2 lead.

Lawrence battled back to tie the game in the top of the fifth. Brad Hauser's two-out double started the rally, and he scored on an error by the center fielder. After another error allowed Tommy Schmidt to score, Tim Salm blasted a two-run homer, the first round-tripper of his career, to tie the game at 6-6. Salm finished 3-for-4.

The Quakers then took control of the game with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth. Byron Myers hit a two-run homer and John Goodwin had a two-run double to highlight the inning.

Guilford added three more runs in the seventh to seal the win, and John added a solo homer in the eighth for the Quakers.

Ray Tucker came on in relief in the fourth and took the loss. Red MacLean pitched one inning and allowed four runs, all unearned, to get the win.
