North Carolina Wesleyan sweeps Vikings

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- The North Carolina Wesleyan baseball team, a participant in the 2006 NCAA Division III World Series, took a nonconference doubleheader from Lawrence University on Wednesday.

The Battling Bishops downed Lawrence 12-4 and 5-0.

in the opener, Lawrence (0-5) led 2-0 after scoring single runs in the second and fourth. Wesleyan (18-10) then pounded out nine hits and scored eight times in the bottom of the fourth. The big blows were a pair of two-run doubles from Nathan West and Chris Masters.

Lawrence added pair of runs in the sixth to trim lead to 9-4, but Wesleyan scored three more times in the bottom of the sixth to seal the win.

Doug Roenker went six innings, allowing six hits, to get the win. Alex Fritsch allowed 13 hits in six innings and took the loss.

In the nightcap, a trio of Wesleyan pitchers silenced the Lawrence bats. Shaun Moore gave up six hits in four innings but kept the Vikings off the board to get the win.

Josh Richie went the distance for Lawrence, allowing nine hits while striking out one and walking four.

Wesleyan led 1-0 on West's run-scoring single in the second, but the Bishops pulled away with four runs in the fifth. Mark Wooten had a two-run single in the rally, and Joel Creef picked up an RBI double.

Bill Campell came on in relief of Moore in the fifth and he worked a pair of scoreless frames before Justin Batts set the Vikings down in order in the seventh to finish the game.
