DANVILLE, Va. -- The Lawrence University baseball team dropped a pair of nonconference games on Tuesday at Averett College. Averett defeated the Vikings 1-0 and 8-2.
Lawrence (0-3) wasted a fine effort in the opener from pitcher Kevin Kangas, making his debut for the Vikings. Kangas allowed only four hits, struck out six and walked two while going the distance.
Averett (26-5) scored the game's lone run when Ahmed Shelton tripled to lead off the sixth inning and scored on John Lesueur's one-out single.
Jacob Waller went the distance to earn the victory. He allowed only three hits, struck out two and walked three. Tommy Schmidt, Brad Hauser and Hawk Haiduke collected Lawrence's three hits.
In the nightcap, Lawrence jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when Haiduke singled, stole second and scored Billy Bodle's two-out single.
That lead lasted until the bottom of the second when the Cougars scored three times against Hauser. The big blow in the inning was Brad Turner's three-run double. Turner went 3-for-3 in the nightcap.
Averett made it 5-1 with a pair of runs in the fifth. Chris Carr singled home a run and later scored on a fielder's choice ground ball.
The Cougars put the game away with three runs in the sixth, with Shelton picking up a run-scoring single and Joey Garry driving in another run with a double.
Lawrence picked up its other run in the seventh when Hauser singled to score Dan Behnke.
