Second Annual Saxophone Studio and Alumni Recital

Sunday, May 28, 2006
2:00 p.m.
Reception to follow

Harper Hall
Lawrence University

Free and open to the public

All alumni, parents and guests are invited to the Second Annual Saxophone Studio and Alumni Recital on Sunday, May 28 in Harper Hall. The performance marks the world premiere of "We Fall...We Rise," a piece for saxophone ensemble by Javier Arau, '98, and commissioned by alumni of the Lawrence University saxophone studio. Also on the program is "Workers Union," by Louis Andriessen, performed by an ensemble of all current saxophone students, saxophone alumni, percussion and keyboard. In addition to these two pieces, the concert features alumni quartets and jazz and classical chamber ensembles composed of current conservatory students. A light reception will follow the performance.

After completing New England Conservatory's graduate program in jazz composition, saxophonist and composer Javier Arau (LU '98) moved to New York City, where, since September 1, 2001, he has freelanced as a performer, composer and teacher. He has played gigs at many of Manhattan's jazz clubs with his own ensembles and as a sideman, and he has continued to play classical saxophone in both chamber and orchestral settings. He has also written music for feature film, musical theater, cabaret, and various chamber ensembles, and is an active member of the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop. In 2002, Javier was a winner of the ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Award. In 2005, Javier's music for jazz orchestra was published with UNC Jazz Press. He is thrilled and honored to be writing for an ensemble of Lawrence alumni.

About his new piece for saxophone ensemble, Javier says, "'We Fall...We Rise' is a pretty loaded title, and I think it has several different meanings. From a world view: Being in New York City on 9/11 had a profound impact on me, and, while this is not a "9/11" piece, I certainly can't imagine having written it before that fateful day. The current situation in our world saddens me deeply, and I feel an earnest need to break beyond our troubles and arrive at something more human and compassionate. I am not making a partisan political statement here, because I am more interested in expressing a common goal that we all share--a deep desire for some resolution and a deeper desire for an end to so much turmoil. While composing the piece, I also spent time thinking about my own personal arc as a young alum. New York is a tough place: exhilarating and truly rewarding, yet enormously unforgiving and challenging. I have had to work harder than I ever have had to work before, and, I believe, I share with so many other young alumni this certain struggle to carve my own niche as a working musician. Finally, on a really microcosmic level, the title might just be me thinking about my nearly one-year-old daughter, Maya, trying take her first steps. She's getting there!"

Alumni Participants:

Craig Hietpas, '93 Ryan Alban, '03
Matthew Arau, '97 Casey Schmidt, '03

An Evening with President Jill Beck

6:00 p.m., Reception
6:45 p.m., Remarks by President Beck

Lucinda's Dining Hall
Colman Hall

$20 per person
$15, Members of the Classes of 1995-05

The Lawrence University Alumni Association of the Fox Valley and the Board of Trustees cordially invite you to an Evening with President Jill Beck and Lawrence Fellows. Appetizers, wine, and soft drinks will be served.

Jill Beck was inaugurated as Lawrence University's 15th President in May 2005. Her remarks this evening will provide an overview of her vision for the university, including major new initiatives such as The Lawrence Fellows in the Liberal Arts and Sciences program.

The Lawrence Fellows program was initiated in Fall 2005 with the hiring of eight Fellows for the 2005-06 academic year. Fellows are appointed for two years, during which they teach courses, offer individualized instruction opportunities to students, and continue their professional activities as scholars and/or performers. A unique aspect of the program is its scale and breadth. All fields represented by departments or interdisciplinary areas are eligible to apply for Fellows and a goal of the program is, eventually, to have twenty Fellows on Campus in any given year.

Guests will have the opportunity to meet President Beck, Lawrence Fellows, and other alumni parents, and friends in the informal reception preceding the presentation.

John Harmon 70th Birthday Concert

Tuesday, October 25
Lawrence Memorial Chapel
8:00 pm

John Harmon earned a Wisconsin Artist Fellowship in 2001 and the prestigious Jazziz award in 1998. His significant contributions to music education and culture over a sustained period of time are recognized by the Wisconsin Music Educators Association’s 1999 Distinguished Service Award and the Fox Valley Arts Council’s Renaissance Award in 2000. These are the latest of many accolades that have marked a professional life deeply involved with both music and teaching.

Harmon’s recent acclaimed recordings include a solo piano album of his own compositions, Rite of Passage (Stellar); works for symphony orchestra and wind ensemble, Bobby Shew: The Music of John Harmon (Seabreeze); scorings of his original songs for voice and chamber orchestra, Strings Attached (Stellar); standards and original compositions on An Evening of Jazz with the John Harmon Trio (Klavier KD-77012) and, with singer Janet Planet, More Beautiful than Planned (Stellar; www.janetplanet.com).

Harmon has been one of America’s busiest composers. His accomplishment as a jazz pianist may be heard as one of many influences in his compositions whose titles often reflect his love for the outdoors, Native American folklore, and twentieth century literature. Recent commissions/residencies have taken Harmon from New York to Oregon. A May 2004 premiere by the Lawrence University Wind Ensemble (Robert Levy, conductor) of “Symphony for Wind Ensemble (For Love of the Game)” was a joint consortium commission of eight colleges including Harvard University, Ithaca College, and Lawrence. The work was released on a Fall 2004 Lawrence University Wind Ensemble CD, Air Mosaic, (Mark Records 5341-MCD).

Harmon’s continuing role as composer-in-residence for the Red Lodge (Montana) Music Festival (since 1991) has greatly expanded his growing catalog of chamber works. Among the more than 20 chamber works over the past 14 years are his recently premiered works “Crazy Horse- Reluctant Hero,” a stunning tour-de-force for bassoon and piano, “Wounded Knee” for classical guitar (premiered in Japan), “Hill People” (string quintet), “Medicine Wheel” (cello quartet), “Cody” (piano trio), “North Country Suite” violin/piano), “An American Hero” (brass quintet), ”Songs from the Child Within” soprano/piano), and “Prayer for the Bison” (marimba/clarinet duo).

Recent premieres of a large number of commissioned works in the USA and in other countries, include “This Sweet Abundant Land” (orchestra, choir, narrator), on the occasion of Wisconsin’s Sesquicentennial and “Cry of the Owl” (choir and orchestra) inspired by, and employing the text known as “Chief Seattle’s Speech.” Other orchestral commissions/premieres include the multi-movement “Suite of Migrations”; “I Am Africa”; “Earth Day Portrait”; “Song of the River People”; and “House Made of Dreams.”

As a resident of Winneconne, WI, and choir director for the town’s First Presbyterian Church, Harmon has composed over 100 choral works, including anthems, introits, and music for children’s choir. His music is written for all ages and levels of ability and is available through several publishers, including: Ensemble Music (brass chamber music); Alliance Publications (choral music and concert band); and, Really Good Music (jazz ensemble works).

Other commissioners/performers of Harmon’s music include: Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, “The Orchestra” (Los Angeles), Fox Valley Symphony (WI), Santa Fe Chamber Orchestra, and The Mirecourt Trio. Jazz and contemporary greats have been involved in several premiere performances, including flugel horn player Bobby Shew, Brazilian singer Flora Purim, Matrix, and the Either Orchestra. College residencies/premieres include Harvard University (MA), Lawrence University (WI), and Eastman School of Music (NY). Harmon has been a composer-in-residence for over 40 elementary and secondary schools.

Harmon graduated as a composition major from Lawrence University (Appleton, WI) in 1957. A summer of study with the legendary jazz pianist Oscar Peterson followed, then extensive experience as a pianist and arranger in New York City and as leader of a jazz trio that toured Europe in 1963. On his return to the USA, he recorded the album Lost in Sound with jazz saxophonist Yusef Lateef. Later he attended the State University of New York at Buffalo, studying with Belgian composer Henri Pousseur. From 1971 to 1974, Harmon was director of jazz studies, a program he founded at Lawrence University.

Harmon was co-founder in 1974 of the critically acclaimed contemporary nonet Matrix, recording six albums: Matrix (Ultranova); Matrix IX (RCA Victor); Tale of the Whale and Wizard (both Warner Bros.); Harvest (Pablo); and most recently (2002) Proud Flesh (Summit).

Harmon received an honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts degree from Lawrence University in June 2005 and in July 2005 was made a fellow of the Wisconsin Academy of Science, Arts, and Letters.

Paper Clips

Directed by Elliot Berlin, '77

Opens in Appleton Friday, April 29, 2005

Regal College Avenue 16
W3091 Van Roy Road
Appleton

Elliot A. Berlin, '77, senior producer at The Johnson Group, a documentary film production company in McLean, Va., received the Jury Award for Best American Director at the Rome International Film for his work on the Miramax feature documentary Paper Clips, which was named one of the five best documentaries of 2004 by the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures. Paper Clips, on which Berlin functioned as director, co-producer, second camera operator, and post-production supervisor, told the story of middle-school students in the small town of Whitwell, Tenn., who set out to collect one paper clip for each life lost in the Holocaust. Ultimately, the students dedicated a memorial to Holocaust victims on their school grounds, using an authentic German rail car filled with millions of paper clips collected from contributors around the world. In other projects, Berlin has produced and directed Musical Wizards, a long-form documentary about the inventors of musical instruments, and was supervising producer on HALO: Freefall Warriors, for The Discovery Channel, and for the pilot of Inside the Great Battles, a proposed series for The History Channel.

Lawrence Alumni Jazz Showcase
Laura Van Nostrand Caviani, '84

Monday, October 25, 2004
8:00 p.m.

Harper Hall
Lawrence University Campus

Pianist/composer Laura Van Nostrand Caviani, '84, will appear in the 2004 Lawrence Alumni Jazz Showcase on Monday, October 25 at 8:00 p.m. in Harper Hall. Laura will perform with LU jazz faculty members Mark Urness (bass) and Dane Richeson (drums), and will join Lawrence alumnus and former jazz faculty member John Harmon, '57. Laura will present a collection of original compositions, jazz standards by Thelonious Monk, Lee Morgan, and Horace Silver, and arrangements of traditional songs "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" and "The Water is Wide."

Laura Caviani has performed and recorded for over 15 years. As leader, she has recorded four albums. The Minneapolis Star Tribune proclaims Laura Caviani's debut CD Dreamlife to be: "...in a word, outstanding." Marian McPartland called it "...sparkling and inventive..."

Her second release, As One, is touted as "stunningly fresh" by Jazz Times. Her holiday album, Angels We Haven't Heard, features a stellar Minneapolis-based band and is considered "this season's finest new jazz cd of holiday music" by the St. Paul Pioneer Press. The Star Tribune says her latest solo release, In Your Own Sweet Way is "...poised right where the salon meets the saloon, with as much spunk as serenity."

As a sideman, Ms. Caviani has recorded and toured with the 2002 Grammy nominee Karrin Allyson (Concord Records) whose band, according to the Wall Street Journal, "...could waltz into any New York nightclub and tear up the joint..." Ms. Caviani has shared the stage with other greats such as Toots Thielmans, Bob Mintzer, and Dave Liebman. Locally, she performs and records with the Pete Whitman Quintet and the jazz orchestra JazzMN, both on the new Artegra label.

In '97, Caviani received a grant from the Atlantic Center for the Arts to study with renowned pianist and composer JoAnne Brackeen. The following year, she was one of four American musicians selected to study in Japan at the Akiyoshidai International Art Village.

As a composer, her commissions include numerous works for jazz ensembles (some of which are currently available through Increase Music Publishing) as well as orchestral works for both the Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra and the Kansas City Symphony Orchestra.

Caviani has both a bachelor of music in composition from Lawrence University and a master of music in improvisation from The University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. She has taught at a number of schools including St. John's University, the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire, The University of St. Thomas, and many middle schools in Minneapolis through the "Harman How to Listen Program," an outreach program co-founded by Wynton Marsalis.

Alumni and friends are invited to attend this free concert

Bill Bonifas
As a student in the late '70s, Bill Bonifas took advantage of Lawrence University's diverse curriculum pursuing the study of music, economics, and religion. Over the past 25 years, his interest in music and economics has led to two growing careers.

As a musician, Bill is a long-standing member of Grammy award winner Douglas Spotted Eagle's touring ensemble. He has performed with Douglas at the Jazz Yatra Festival in Bombay India, the Catalina Jazz Festival, the 2002 Olympics, and on several nationally released recordings. He has also collaborated extensively with Genesis/ Phil Collins' guitarist Daryl Stuermer and sound track composer Peter Buffett. Recently forsaking the role of sideman, Bill wrote and produced a jazz oriented CD entitled "the bonifas quartet" that was released to critical acclaim in 2001. New York Jazz critic Bill Milkowski commented "A winning debut. The guitarist's clean-toned six-string voice resounds with a sense of assuredness and warmth on these ten original compositions." Bill is a board member of the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music and helps coordinate the "Jazz in the Park" concert series.

Bill leveraged his senior research and subsequent internship in urban economics into a profession by joining the real estate broker, manager, and consultant Polacheck/CB Richard Ellis in 1979. He is a managing director of Polacheck and directs the firm's Office Properties group. Bill has negotiated many of Wisconsin's largest real estate transactions including the sale of the US Bank Center for over $200,000,000. His team represents the real estate interests of several major corporations throughout the US. His research and comments have appeared in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and numerous trade publications. He is a past president of the Commercial Association of Realtors-Wisconsin, as well as a board member of the Wisconsin Association of Realtors.

On a personal note, Bill recently settled down by marrying Tammy Taylor Bonifas, buying a home, and raising two puppies. The couple is expecting their first child in May.

Includes presentation, admission to museum exhibits, and reception

The Lawrence University Alumni Association of the Fox Valley warmly invites all alumni, parents, and friends to a background presentation and visit to the Outagamie Museum's "Joseph McCarthy, A Modern Tragedy."

Though the rise and fall of Joseph McCarthy is often compared to a Greek tragedy, it was also an American one. Assistant Professor of History Jerry Podair explores the historical ramifications of this tragedy for anti-communism in American politics and culture, as well as for the ongoing debate over the limits of dissent in a democratic society. Kim Louagie, curator of exhibits, discusses the difficulties Museum staff faced in balancing public trust and intellectual integrity in their effort to open this exhibit.

Whether you remember when Joe McCarthy, Appleton's most controversial son, walked these streets, or have only heard the stories - you will want to fill in more details about this phenomenon in American history.

An hors d'oeuvre and wine reception and full private access to all Museum exhibits, including "The War that Shaped Our World," follows the presentation.

Ballet Folklórico Mexico
Danzantes: Pre-Hispanic and Hispanic Dances from Mexico

Wednesday, May 2, 2001
7:30 p.m.

Lawrence University
Wriston Amphitheatre
Rain site: Buchanan Kiewit Recreation Center

The Lawrence University Alumni Association warmly invites all alumni, parents, and friends to join current students for a special performance of Mexican folkloric dances by the Ballet Folklórico Mexico.

Mexican culture has been explored in American society primarily through its rich and diverse foods and also through its celebrations. However, there is still much to learn about this culture drenched with indigenous traditions as well as Spanish and American ways of life. One of the most important Mexican traditions is "la danza folklórica." Mexican folkloric dances are a window into the syncretism of Mexican culture. Additionally, Mexican folkloric dances are full of passion, joy, and tradition, revealing additional facets of this culture.

Following the presentation of Ballet Folklórico Mexico, please join us for a reception where you can savor traditional dishes prepared by local restaurants. You will also have an opportunity to meet community dance groups, and to join them. A special thanks to Carnicería México, Lara's Tortilla Flats, Los Compadres, Francisco's, Zacatecas, La Bamba, El Azteca, and Juanita's Hacienda for providing food for this event.

This event is sponsored by the Lawrence University Diversity Center, the Class of 1965 Student Activity Grant, the Student Organization for University Programming (SOUP), and the Alyssa Paul Maria Student Entertainment Fund.
