$20, Classes of 1996-2006
All alumni, parents, and friends are warmly invited to join us for lunch, a viewing of the Freshman Studies film Brazil, and discussion led by Timothy X. Troy '85, Associate Professor of Theatre Arts and J. Thomas and Julie Esch Hurvis Professor of Theatre and Drama. Filmmaker Terry Gilliam describes his modern masterpiece, Brazil (1985), as "...a period piece of the 20th Century. All of it!" and "The flip side of now." The film was introduced into the Freshman Studies curriculum in 2006. Since then students and professors have explored its references to Kafka, George Orwell, and Fellini. Its prescience regarding the effects of terrorism, mixed with playful absurdity, are a testament to the genius of Gilliam, a Minnesota native and the only American member of the Monty Python creative team.
Professor Troy shares some of his ideas from his Freshman Studies lecture about the film, and discusses the process of introducing a new work into the Freshman Studies curriculum. A question and answer session with Professor Troy follows the Brazil screening.

The Lawrence University Alumni Association of Minneapolis/St. Paul warmly invites all alumni, parents, and friends to a Freshman Studies Revisited event with Timothy Spurgin, Associate Professor of English and Bonnie Glidden Buchanan Professor of English.
The Freshman Studies program has enjoyed great success with two recent additions to its syllabus: the "I have a dream" speech, by Martin Luther King, Jr.; and "Alabama," a cut from John Coltrane's Live at Birdland album. Produced in 1963, both pieces respond to experiences of injustice and oppression, and wrestle with the same feelings of hope and despair. Taken together, they help to complicate one's understanding of the Civil Rights movement and of King's legacy in particular. In our discussion, we'll consider the details of the two works -- what is the difference, for example, between a speech and a song? -- and explore their relevance to continuing debates about American history and American values.
Following the discussion, there will be time to visit the Museum's "RACE: Are We So Different?" exhibit, which examines, among other themes, the everyday experiences of race and the science that is challenging the ideas regarding it.

LU Conservatory alumna Laura Van Nostrand Caviani, '84, announces several upcoming performances in the Twin Cities.
Biography
Laura Caviani has performed and recorded for over 15 years. As leader, she has recorded four albums. The Minneapolis Star Tribune proclaims Laura Caviani's debut CD, "Dreamlife," to be: "...in a word, outstanding". Marian McPartland called it "...sparkling and inventive...".
Her second release, "As One," is touted as "stunningly fresh" by Jazz Times. Her holiday album, "Angels We Haven't Heard," features a stellar Minneapolis based band, and is considered "this season's finest new jazz cd of holiday music" by the St. Paul Pioneer Press. The Star Tribune says her latest solo release, "In Your Own Sweet Way" is, "...poised right where the salon meets the saloon, with as much spunk as serenity".
As a sideman, Ms. Caviani has recorded and toured with the 2002 Grammy nominee Karrin Allyson (Concord Records) whose band, according to the Wall Street Journal, "...could waltz into any New York nightclub and tear up the joint...". Ms. Caviani has shared the stage with other greats as Toots Theilemans, Bob Mintzer, and Dave Liebman. Locally, she performs and records with the Pete Whitman Quintet and the jazz orchestra JazzMN, both on the new Artegra label.
In '97, Caviani received a grant from the Atlantic Center for the Arts to study with renowned pianist and composer JoAnne Brackeen. The following year, she was one of four American musicians selected to study in Japan at the Akiyoshidai International Art Village.
As a composer, her commissions include numerous works for jazz ensembles, (some of which are currently available through Increase Music Publishing) as well as orchestral works for both the Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra and the Kansas City Symphony Orchestra.
Caviani has both a bachelors of music in Composition from Lawrence University, and a masters of music in Improvisation from The University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. She has taught at a number of schools, including St. John's University, the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire, The University of St. Thomas, and many middle schools in Minneapolis through the "Harman How to Listen Program," an outreach program co-founded by Wynton Marsalis.

The Commodore
79 Western Avenue North, St. Paul
Join the Lawrence University Alumni Association of Minneapolis-St. Paul in welcoming Dr. Richard Warch for an informative tour of the Lawrence campus - without the journey to Wisconsin.
Richard Warch has served as president of Lawrence since 1979. During his tenure, the campus has changed dramatically. Every major academic building has been constructed anew or renovated and more changes are yet to come.
Now, the Trustees and the president are poised to address residential life. Plans are being made for a new campus center, which will include food services and student union facilities, the construction of additional residential halls, and the renovation or conversion of existing buildings - an exciting era in Lawrence's history.
All alumni, parents, and friends are warmly invited to join President Warch and Associate Director of Alumni Relations Andrea Powers, '94, for what promises to be a spirited and informative gathering.

The Lawrence University Alumni Association of Minneapolis and St. Paul warmly invites all alumni, parents, and friends to an evening of jazz, Latin, and rock with "The Things Quartet." Comprised of Max Wendt, '94, saxophone; Rafe Lyford, '94, trombone; Jim Guckenberg, '94, drums; and Matt Netter, bass, the quartet boasts a trio of Lawrence Conservatory alumni.
Performing regularly at the Borealis Café for over a year, "The Things Quartet" plays all original compositions in a wide variety of styles. They also perform at The Contented Cow in Northfield, Minnesota. A complete band biography is available below.
Things Biography
Max, Rafe, and I have been playing together since Lawrence. Our first band was called the Pneumatic ensemble, which also included Jason Roebke, '96, on bass, Chuck Keane, '95, on saxophone, and Ryan Korb, '96, on drums and percussion. That group was together for about nine months. We rehearsed several times and gave one performance. The band members were scattered throughout the Midwest and it proved too difficult keep together.
In 1998, I approached Max and Rafe (who had recently relocated to the Twin Cities) about forming a quartet. I took the role of leader and named the group "The Things Quartet." In November of 1998, we made our first recording in my school’s music room with Jason Roebke on bass. Titled "Things," it was a mixture of originals and jazz standards. After recording, we played a couple of gigs in coffee houses around the Twin Cities but not very much happened.
In the fall of 2000, I happened upon the Borealis Café while playing with another band. It was a perfect setting for "Things," so I booked the band and we began rehearsing again. Matt Netter came in on bass and we began playing at the Borealis monthly and eventually weekly. Currently, we play there once or twice a month and play supplementary gigs at a place called The Contented Cow in Northfield, Minnesota.
The band’s music is all original, with Rafe contributing half of the music and Max and I contributing the rest. The music varies in its stylistic approach as well as its format. Tunes range from jazz to Latin to rock feels. The music is sometimes strictly dictated but more often than not it is open-ended and it is left to the performers to dictate.
Our goal as a band is to play the music we feel inspired to play. I started "The Things Quartet" as an outlet for our creative expression. The rules are that there are no rules. We will do pretty much anything that we can make work. None of us plays music professionally at this point, so the band is strictly a labor of love. There is nothing quite like playing with people who are your good friends and with whom you also see eye to eye in a musical sense.
Our most recent project is a recording of Rafe’s original music under Rafe's name. He plans to market the recording and copies will be available soon. In the future, we hope to continue recording and find more venues to play.
