The Lawrence University Alumni Association of Milwaukee invites you to celebrate a milestone in the history of jazz – the 50th anniversary of the recording of the classic Miles Davis album "Miles Ahead." Begin the evening with Lawrence alumni, parents, and friends at a buffet dinner in UWM's Zelazo Center, Room 250. Immediately following dinner, Lawrence Conservatory Professor Mark Urness presents pre-concert remarks providing context on the collaborations of Miles Davis and Gil Evans and their impact on the development of jazz.

After this presentation, guests will have reserved seats in the Helen Bader Daniels, M-D'49 Concert Hall for the "Miles Ahead – 50th Anniversary 1957-2007" concert. The Lawrence University Jazz Ensemble (LUJE), directed by Fred Sturm '73, with LU faculty trumpet soloist John Daniel, is joined by the Milwaukee Youth Symphony (Cliff Gribble and Johnny Padilla, co-directors) and the UWM Jazz Ensemble and Youth Jazz Ensemble (Curt Hanrahan, director) – creating a musical evening you'll long remember. We hope to see you there.

The Helene Zelazo Center for the Performing Arts is located on the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee campus (parts were formerly Milwaukee-Downer College's campus) at 2419 East Kenwood Boulevard, Milwaukee, between Lake Drive and North Oakland Avenue. The concert hall is named for Helen Daniels Bader, M-D Class of 1949.

Metered parking is available on the street or in the lot immediately behind the building at the Zelazo Center.

Classical Arabic Music Concert

The concert will feature musicians participating in the Heartland Seminar on Arabic Music.

Solo and ensemble performances will highlight seminar faculty and participants. The Heartland Seminar's faculty musicians are: Hicham Chami of Chicago on qanun, Hanna Khoury of Philadelphia on violin, Scott Marcus of Santa Barbara on ney, Naser Musa of Los Angeles on vocals, Karim Nagi Mohammed of Boston on percussion, and Kareem Roustom of Boston on 'ud. The seminar instructors will be joined by guest percussionist Hamid Alwan of Milwaukee. Seminar participants are from the Midwestern states as well as California, Colorado, Virginia, and Massachusetts.

The Heartland Seminar is sponsored by Xauen Music, a Chicago-based organization dedicated to preserving the heritage of classical Arabic, Sephardic, Turkish, and Armenian music.

Lawrence alumni, parents, and friends are warmly invited to cheer the Lawrence University men's basketball team at a special exhibition game against Division I University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Fresh off the finest season in school history, the Vikings open their 2004-2005 campaign at this historic match.

Socialize with Vikings fans at a hearty hors d'oeuvre and soft drink reception before the game; cash beer and wine bar available. At 5:30, UWM head coach Bruce Pearl will make a special appearance, joined by LU head coach John Tharp, team captains, and juniors Kyle MacGillis (Pius XI, Wauwatosa), and Chris Braier (Wauwatosa East).

Seating for our group is in section 116 of the arena circle and tickets will be distributed at the reception. Tickets for ticket-only orders can be picked up at Will Call the night of the game.

For the reception, access the Kilbourn Room from the 490 West Kilbourn Avenue entrance (annex entrance between the U.S. Cellular Arena and Milwaukee Theatre). Game-only tickets should use main entrance.

This is a great opportunity to see Lawrence baseball in your area and spend a fun afternoon outdoors with Lawrentians and friends.

The tailgate pavilions are located east of Miller Park adjacent to the River East Parking Lot. There is no cost for parking. Tickets for the game will be distributed at the tailgate luncheon. There is a pedestrian bridge linking the parking area to the stadium.

President Richard Warch
The second-longest serving president in the college's history, Richard Warch became Lawrence's 14th president on September 1, 1979. Prior to that, he spent two years as vice president for academic affairs and professor of history at Lawrence. From 1968 to 1977, Warch was a member of the Yale University faculty in the history and American studies departments and spent his final year there as associate dean.

In June, 1999, Warch was named to the Executive Committee of the Annapolis Group, an association of more than 100 of America's leading liberal arts colleges. In the 1987 study, "The Effective College President," a two-year project funded by the Exxon Education Foundation, Warch was named one of the nation's top 100 college presidents.

A native of Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J., Warch earned his bachelor of arts degree from Williams College in 1961, his bachelor of divinity degree from Yale Divinity School in 1964 and his Ph.D. in American studies from Yale University in 1968.

He is the author of the book School of the Prophets: Yale College, 1710-1740, co-edited the volume John Brown in the Prentice-Hall Great Lives Observed Series and has addressed a wide variety of issues facing higher education in numerous published articles, reviews and commentaries.

The Lawrence University Alumni Association of Milwaukee warmly invites you to a special look at the Milwaukee Art Museum's unique architecture and a private viewing of the feature exhibition: "Leonardo da Vinci and the Splendor of Poland: A History of Collecting and Patronage."

James Auer, '50, Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel art critic, will discuss the architecture and design of the new Quadracci Pavilion and present accompanying slides. Designed by Spanish-born architect Santiago Calatrava, this museum addition opened in May 2001.

Associate Professor of Art History Michael Orr will speak about the cornerstone pieces in the feature exhibition: Leonardo da Vinci's Lady with an Ermine and Hans Memling's The Last Judgment. There will also be time to explore the exhibition on your own.

An hors d'oeuvre reception follows the presentation and tour. Non-alcoholic beverages (including spiced cider) are complementary and a cash bar is available.

Eric Simonson, '82, returns to Milwaukee Repertory Theater as the Playwright and Director for this masterful tale. He directed ANNA CHRISTIE last season and co-wrote and directed WORK SONG during the 2001/2002 season, which the Chicago Tribune hailed as an "exhilarating new drama." He has directed at many regional theaters including Huntington Theatre, Cincinnati Playhouse, Minnesota Opera, Lifeline Theatre, L.A. Theatre Works, and Remains Theatre. His production of THE SONG OF JACOB ZULU, produced originally at the Steppenwolf Theatre, traveled to The Perth Festival in Australia and ran on Broadway, where it received six Tony Award® nominations including one for Best Director. He has also received a Joseph Jefferson Citation, The Arts and Media Award from the NCCJ and The Princess Grace Foundation Award for his work at Steppenwolf Theatre Company. Mr. Simonson received an Academy Award nomination for the film On Tiptoe, which he directed for HBO/Cinemax.

Richard Warch has served as president of Lawrence since 1979. During his tenure, the campus has changed dramatically. Every major academic building has been constructed anew or renovated and more changes are yet to come.

Now, the Trustees and the president are poised to address residential life. Plans are being made for a new campus center, which will include food services and student union facilities, the construction of additional residential halls, and the renovation or conversion of existing buildings - an exciting era in Lawrence’s history.

Chemistry: More than Just Equations

All alumni, parents, friends, and family are warmly invited to join the Lawrence University Alumni Association of Milwaukee as we host current Lawrentians in their dynamic production, Chemistry: More Than Just Equations.

This presentation is the unique chemistry show presented over the last five years for thousands, ranging from pre-school classes to high school guidance counselors to seniors in a bowling alley. Designed by Lawrence students to convey the importance and excitement of chemistry in our daily lives, the show incorporates chemical concepts into self-contained skits and uses theatrics, costumes, slides, music, audience interaction, and lots of humor. All ages enjoy the basic message: chemistry is cool.

Dana Kass, '01, a member of the group, says: "We can only guarantee that the audience will have a good time and maybe learn a thing or two about science in everyday life. No previous science or chemistry knowledge is necessary."

Bring the whole family and expect some surprises. Space is limited, so respond today. Parking is available at lots F, G, and H just across the street from Straz Hall. (Maps are available upon request.)

Lawrence University is a residential college by design. The trustees have convened a group of students, faculty, staff, and alumni to examine and make recommendations for improvement in the quality of student residential life at Lawrence. The Task Force has recently completed an Interim Report addressing issues such as equity, student housing, food services, the role and adequacy of the current student union, and the overall out-of-classroom experience for students.

The Task Force on Residential Life welcomes the opportunity to hear alumni perspectives and insights on the Interim Report and the trustees' response (available at www.lawrence.edu). Please join members of the Task Force for light appetizers and informal discussion.

President Warch became Lawrence's fourteenth president in 1979 and is now the second longest-serving president in the college's history. You'll hear the latest news from campus including progress on the new science building where Stephenson Hall once stood. President Warch will also respond to questions about other aspects of the college today.
