Academy Award winner and Steppenwolf Theatre Company ensemble member Eric Simonson brings the great man to life, and shows us the ideas and people who made him the complex, extraordinary icon he was. Madison Repertory Theatre commissioned this world premier, inspired by “When Pride Still Mattered” David Mariniss’ biography of the great Packers coach.” (Madison Repertory Theatre website)

All Lawrence alumni, parents, and friends are invited to the Madison Children's Museum feature "Picturing Peace: An ArtsBridge America Exhibition."
The exhibition features a collection of 60 ArtsBridge photographs taken by students that communicate their ideas and feelings about peace. The exhibit includes photos by K-12 students who participated in Picturing Peace projects taught by LU ArtsBridge scholars in the Fox Cities, as well as ArtsBridge photos by students from Huegel Elementary in Madison. Click here to view selected photos from the exhibition.
The Picturing Peace arts and technology curriculum developed by Robert Beck involved students discussing the meaning
of peace;then planning and photographing subjects that best communicated their ideas and feelings. By participating
in this program these students acquired new skills and understandings:
- They explored their artistic talent for photography and their pleasure in making visual art;
- They improved their facility in digital photography and technology;
- They enhanced their literacy skills by seeing the range of symbols used to communicate a common idea;
- By contributing their personal images of peace, they explored their own positive social feelings, values, and motives.
October is the Madison Children's Museum's month-long celebration "Culture of Peace Month."

Alumni, parents, and friends are warmly invited to join Associate Director of Alumni Relations Andrea Powers, '94, for a program about Lawrence's signature academic program, Freshman Studies, led by Associate Professor of English Tim Spurgin.
This program begins with a brief overview of the Freshman Studies program since its inception in 1945, including the exciting recent developments made possible by a challenge grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities one year ago. Following this presentation, guests may choose to observe or participate in a discussion of a passage from Plato's Republic.
"The reviewers were very impressed with Lawrence's Freshman Studies Program, terming it a superb example of how the humanities can form the core of a sound undergraduate education ... the program [is] particularly meritorious since few institutions of Lawrence's caliber have successfully engaged faculty members in a common learning experience for all students." - Bruce Cole, Chairman, NEH, 1/02

Lawrence University is a residential college by design. The trustees have convened a group of students, faculty, staff, and alumni to examine and make recommendations for improvement in the quality of student residential life at Lawrence. The Task Force has recently completed an Interim Report addressing issues such as equity, student housing, food services, the role and adequacy of the current student union, and the overall out-of-classroom experience for students.
The Task Force on Residential Life welcomes the opportunity to hear alumni perspectives and insights on the Interim Report and the trustees' response. Please join members of the Task Force for light appetizers and informal discussion.

Join us for Alumni College in Madison - a lively discussion of one of the most tumultuous decades of the 20th century. Although hard to believe, the 1960s are now part of our historical past. Were the '60s really unique? Was there truly a revolution, and if so, what difference has it made to our world today? If you've ever wondered how historians answer these questions, we hope you'll attend this event.
Professor Jerald Podair created the Lawrence history course entitled "Reconsidering the 1960s" and led a popular "rap session" on this topic at last year's 30th reunion. Dr. Podair, a graduate of NYU, Columbia School of Law, and Princeton University, joined the Lawrence faculty in 1998. A specialist in 20th century American urban history and race relations, Podair's doctoral dissertation was awarded the 1998 Allan Nevins Prize by the Society of American Historians for "literary distinction in the writing of history."
All alumni, parents, and friends are warmly invited to bring their own opinions and personal recollections of the '60s to this event. Spirited interaction is promised. Parking is available at the Monona Terrace Ramp from John Nolen Drive (eastbound) or West Wilson Street (westbound) or nearby downtown.
