Troy '85
Lawrence alumni, parents, and friends are warmly invited to join Eric Simonson '82 and Tim Troy '85 for a talk about Corwin and their collaboration followed by a screening of Eric's award-winning film. Please join Associate Director of Alumni Relations, Andrea Powers, '94, and Professor Kathryn Kueny of Lawrence's religious studies department, for an afternoon exploring Islam in America. As a specialist in comparative religions with an emphasis on Islam, Professor Kueny has concentrated her research interests on early Islam and the religious practices that distinguish Muslims from Jews and Christians.
"Islam in America" examines the unique history of Islam in our country, highlighting many of the challenges Muslims face in their everyday American lives. And, as Islam has become the second largest religion in America, we must ask ourselves: Is the United States prepared to identify itself as a Judeo-Christian-Islamic society?
Watts Towers, the most famous landmark within Watts, was recently restored, added to the State Park system of California, combined with an art center, and opened for public access in 2001. Watts Towers is the smallest State Park within California. More information below.
We will conclude with an optional excursion to Mr. J's Louisiana Kitchen, a restaurant that specializes in Louisiana-style seafood and soul food (about 2 miles from the Watts Towers). Pay on your own.
Watts
The community of Watts in South-Central Los Angeles was the location of the Watts Rebellion
in 1965, where Nation of Islam activists, among others, rioted for days.
Watts Towers & Art Center
Watts Towers is a folk art landmark built by Simon Rodia, a European immigrant, from
discarded objects and flotsam between 1921 and 1954. When finished, he deeded this
property to a neighbor and moved from L.A. The Black community has come to embrace these
towers and art center, which features a thriving eclectic mix of art exhibits, performing
arts, and classes that include ceramics, animation, printmaking, drumming, photography,
assemblage, comic books, graphic design and more.
