Stereotypes of witches abound. In a culture where few people believe in witches, we nonetheless find plenty of beliefs about witches. Most of them tend to be inaccurate. Confronting popular myths, Professor Kern will describe historical understandings of witchcraft and show that witch-hunting was central to European (and American) history between 1450 and 1750. He will also illustrate how witchcraft-trials were the product of important changes taking place in western culture, rather than the result of widespread lunacy and political breakdown.
The Lawrence University Alumni Association of Boston warmly invites you to join Associate Professor of History Edmund M. Kern for a fascinating look at witchcraft and its stereotypes, followed by a question-and-answer session. Hors d’oeuvres, beer, wine, and soda will be served prior to Professor Kern's presentation.

6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
The Union Club
8 Park Street, Boston
Join the Lawrence University Alumni Association of Boston in welcoming Dr. Richard Warch for an informative tour of the Lawrence campus - without the journey to Wisconsin.
Richard Warch has served as president of Lawrence since 1979. During his tenure, the campus has changed dramatically. Every major academic building has been constructed anew or renovated and more changes are yet to come.
Now, the Trustees and the president are poised to address residential life. Plans are being made for a new campus center, which will include food services and student union facilities, the construction of additional residential halls, and the renovation or conversion of existing buildings - an exciting era in Lawrence's history.
All alumni, parents, and friends are warmly invited to join President Warch, Vice President for Development Greg Volk, and Director of Alumni Relations Jan Daniels Quinlan, '74, for what promises to be a spirited and informative gathering.
The Union Club of Boston was established in February 1863 by a group of prominent Massachusetts gentlemen who wanted to show their support for the Union during the United States Civil War. Among the Club's earliest members were famous abolitionists, Supreme Court justices, general officers of the Union army, well-known authors and educators, and a president of the United States.
The Union Club clubhouse was purchased in October 1863 from the estate of Abbott Lawrence, the uncle of Amos Adams Lawrence, founder of Lawrence University. The original Lawrence home was completed in 1801 under the design and supervision of Charles Bulfinch, a local architect who would later become famous for his design of the Massachusetts State House, United States Capitol Building, and numerous other famous American landmarks.
The Union Club is located in the historic Beacon Hill district of Boston, and uniquely rests within view of the Massachusetts State House and The Boston Common. The Club is convenient to public transportation. Take the T to the Park Street stop. Walk up Beacon Hill toward the State House. Turn right on Park Street.
Parking is available at One Beacon Street Garage or Boston Common Underground Garage.
