Arthur D. Ullian, ’61, received
the 2006 Lucia R. Briggs Distinguished Achievement Award, which recognizes alumni
of more than 15 years for outstanding contributions to and achievements in
a career field.
Ullian, of Newton, Massachusetts, graduated from Lawrence with a B.A. degree with honors in economics and did graduate work at the London School of Economics. A highly successful real-estate developer and manager, his Boston Land Development Company specialized in assisted and market-rate multi-family housing.
After a bicycle accident in 1991 left him paralyzed from the chest down and with only limited use of his hands and arms, he entered into his “second career,” advocating for increased federal support for biomedical research. He is a frequent witness before congressional committees and is highly respected for the scope and quality of his research, writing, and testimony.
