DOWNER WOMAN OF THE 1930s
Winifred Hamel King, M-D '38

The authors would like to recognize the Downer heritage we received from our mother, Winifred Hamel King, M-D '38. She majored in Home Economics and Art. Winifred became a junior high school home economics teacher. She made Downer's domestic science principles the rules of our house every place we lived. She landscaped yards, designed kitchens, sewed drapes and spreads, made prom gowns, and designed lavish layered dresses for beauty contests of the '50s. She passed on to her daughters the chemistry of molds and bacteria in the refrigerator, the science of bread baking, the alchemy of dry cleaning, and the process of vitamin retention in food preservation. Her Girl Scouts wrangled with large 78 rpm records she had obtained from radio stations, stripping them of their black coats, applying new lacquer, and etching them with chemicals to become aluminum serving trays. Our Christmases were infused with Mrs. Brown's Downer Christmas Pageantry.
