How to Provide Career Information to Students

Would you be willing to answer a current Lawrence student's questions about what a career in your field is really like? how you got to where you are? what it takes to succeed in your field?

The Lawrence University Alumni Association and Career Center are looking for volunteers to give students practical information about careers. We believe that information based on the actual work experiences and career paths of Lawrence alumni will help students make better career decisions. We also want students to realize that their Lawrence education will serve them well in a variety of fields.

These are the guidelines for alumni Career Contact volunteers:

You may be contacted by a student or one of the staff of the Career Center via telephone, email or letter.
If contacted by phone, you will be asked to spend approximately fifteen minutes talking to the student. Phone conversations can be scheduled at your convenience. If contacted by email or letter, you will be expected either to respond in the same manner or schedule a fifteen minute phone conversation - whichever is more convenient for you.
Your function is to answer questions and perhaps give basic advice about your own career path and what the student should consider if he or she wants to follow a similar career path.
You will not be asked or expected to help anyone find a job or internship. You will not be responsible for solving a student's career problems. Remember, you can always refer students to the LU Career Center.
You only need to fill out the volunteer form once, unless information changes. The form will be put on file and you will be contacted when a student requests a contact in your field.
The Career Center will do its best to limit the number of contacts as you request on your registration form. (NOTE: This program depends on student interest. This means that some alumni who volunteer to be Career Contacts may not be contacted for assistance.)

Our objective is to establish a database of interested alumni from a variety of career paths who will be available on an on-going basis to provide this help to students. Our alumni have found an incredible variety of careers - most of them highly satisfying - and we want to tap this valuable source of information for the benefit of today's students.
