From the Office of Alumni Relations
Dear alumni,
Fall 2009 feels like a whole new chapter in Lawrence’s history with the grand opening of the long-awaited Richard and Margot Warch Campus Center. This edition of LENs gives you a chance to “visit” this beautiful new building which has already transformed student life at Lawrence. Also, please take a few minutes to enjoy some of our short Lawrence videos, learn about the Conservatory webcasts, and read an update on the More Light! campaign. There’s no better way to stay informed about your alma mater from the comfort of your own computer.
Warmest regards,
Jan Daniels Quinlan ‘74

Warch Campus Center Grand Opening
Years of planning and building culminated in the grand opening of the Richard and Margot Warch Campus Center the weekend of September 18-20. Students, faculty, alumni, and community members came together for a weekend of festivities to commemorate this event. Rik and Margot greeted guests and unveiled an official portrait of the former president, which now hangs in the Campus Center. Check out the LU News feature and WBAY's segment for a recap of the weekend, or visit this link for more information on the Campus Center.

This is Lawrence - A Revitalized Campus
The "This is Lawrence" video series, created by Alex Bunke '09, Stephen Anunson '10, and Chelsea Biba '11, continues with A Revitalized Campus, showing some of the exciting recent changes on campus.
Part of this video shows the brand new College Avenue median. The redesign of the College Avenue median between Drew and Lawe Street was undertaken to improve pedestrian safety by creating a hardy garden of densely planted, salt-tolerant shrubs, perennials, grasses and trees. It was a cooperative effort involving the City of Appleton, the neighboring community and Lawrence University. The objectives of the project were to ensure safety, reduce traffic speed, visually enhance the thoroughfare through the campus, beautify the entrance into downtown Appleton and to serve as a model for beautifying roadsides, medians and roundabouts. The on-campus initiative for this project came from Green Roots:The Sustainable Lawrence Initiative. The signage was sponsored in part by the Class of 1996 through their senior class gift campaign. The median will be maintained by the university in perpetuity.
Sustainable Lawrence Video Competition
As part of Lawrence's green initiative, a contest was launched asking students to create a video expressing the initiative. Three final videos went up for judging by both the Lawrence Community, and a selected panel of judges. In the end, two of the three videos won. "Sustainable Lawrence A" video, produced by Kaushal Malde '11, Nate Grady '11, and Kevin Gabrielsen '11 earned the judges' panel vote, while "Sustainable Lawrence B," produced by Stephen Anunson '10, Katie Langenfeld '10, Carolyn Armstrong '10, Molly Preston '10, and Oren Jakobson '11 was the winner of the online popular vote. The third video, "Lawrence Growing Green", produced by Tom Coben '12 and Rosie Graber '12, followed closely behind for both the judges' votes and the popular vote.

Web Spotlight
Conservatory Webcasts kick off on Friday, October 9
We are very excited to kick off our second year of live webcasts from the Chapel on Friday, October 9, at 8:00 p.m. CST. Join us as the Lawrence Viking Chorale, the Concert Choir, and Cantala perform under the direction of Paul Nesheim and Phillip Swan.
I would like to personally invite you to share in the excitement. This year you will be able to tune in to every one of our major ensemble performances, all 21 of them! Each broadcast features guest hosts from the Conservatory faculty introducing our pre-concert programming, and intermission interviews that provide deeper insights into the performance. Last year’s webcasts were a hit with listeners across the country and around the globe. One alumna was listening to our Messiah concert from Bangladesh! We even had alumni groups using the webcasts as a perfect excuse to throw a listening party complete with wine and cheese. If you decide to host a webcast party, let us know and we will be sure to recognize your group on the air.
Happy listening,
Brian Pertl '86
Dean of the Conservatory
Lawrence has a new Facebook Page!
We created a Facebook page for Lawrence on September 23 and in less than a week's time over 800 people signed up as fans. Faculty, current students, alumni and friends of Lawrence have shown up to swap stories, share photos and ask questions like, "What does the new campus center look like?" As a fan, you too can post photos, keep up with LU news and connect with old friends. Join us!
The Lawrence Conservatory has a Facebook page too!
