Robert E. Spoo ’79
The Lucia R. Briggs Distinguished Achievement Award
Robert Spoo is a professor in Intellectual Property, Law and Literature at the University of Tulsa. He has also enjoyed a distinguished legal career, specializing in copyright and intellectual property law. Before his legal career, Spoo was was editor-in-chief of /James Joyce Quarterly/ and is considered by many to be an expert on James Joyce. A consummate professional, Spoo has also shared his expertise with the National Library of Ireland, the government of Hanoi, universities, research libraries, software technology companies, and countless record companies and filmmakers in the United States.
John Holdridge ’77
The Lucia R. Briggs Distinguished Achievement Award
John Holdridge is the director of the American Civil Liberty Union's Capital Punishment Project in Durham, North Carolina. Throughout his career Holdridge has been a powerful advocate for ending the death penalty in the United States. He has uncovered numerous incidents of racial bias and other disparities in capital punishment cases, and exposed a flawed system of justice that has sent innocent men to their deaths. In 2001 he was the recipient of the National Legal Aid & Defender Association's Life in the Balance Achievement Award.
Farnham Jarrard ’58
The George B. Walter ’36 Service to Society Award
Farnham Jarrard has enjoyed a rewarding career in the steel industry, holding executive leadership positions at Allied Structural Steel (Hammond, Indiana), and Bristol Steel and Iron (Bristol, Virginia). In 1989 he was awarded a lifetime honorary directorship in the American Institute of Steel Construction. Jarrard has also served on as mayor of Bristol and was instrumental in efforts to try to reestablish passenger rail service between southwestern Virginia and Washington, D.C. He also serves on the Board of Trustees for Virginia Intermont College.
Judy Huffman Sutherland ’58

Judy Huffman Sutherland was fortunate enough to study with George B. Walter during her time at Lawrence. While studying for her Master’s degree in counseling psychology at the Adler School of Professional Psychology in Chicago, she took a class in art therapy that changed her life—and the direction of her career. She became a Registered Art Therapist (ATR) and was one of the instrumental forces behind the development of the Master of Arts in Counseling: Art Therapy program at Adler Graduate School
Jo Howarth Noonan ’78
The Gertrude B. Jupp M-D’18 Outstanding Service Award
Jo Howarth Noonan has spent the last 30 years sharing her time, talent, and resources with the college. She has served as secretary for the Class of 1978, president of the Lawrence University Alumni Association Board of Directors, and as a member of the “More Light!” capital campaign Alumni Advisory Working Group. Her insights throughout all these endeavors has proven invaluable and helped position the college for the years ahead. Articulate, intelligent, and a “people person” through-and-through, Jo exemplifies the true spirit of a Lawrentian.
Steve Tie Shue '04

Steve Tie Shue has never been afraid to roll up his sleeves and "do more" for the Lawrence community as an alumni volunteer. He honed his ability to nurture interpersonal relationships and keep everybody connected during his tenure as president of the Class of 2004. Since graduation he has served as vice president of the Lawrence University Alumni Association Board of Directors, chaired the Class of 2004 5th Reunion steering committee, and worked for the Viking Gift Committee. He is the youngest recipient to ever receive this award.
