How did your Lawrence experience prepare you for your current profession?: Lawrence offers a well-rounded educational experience. I had professors who enabled me to explore my interest in areas that were not necessarily directly connected to my major. I was able to create a non-traditional educational path (with the help of my advisor) where I was able to explore opportunities within the Fox Cities Community. I was introduced to non-profit work through the Volunteer Center on campus which solidified my interest in philanthropy and becoming employed in a helping profession.
What is one piece of advice for prospective students about their time at Lawrence that is important for their lives after Lawrence?: Regardless of where you were raised or where you are headed after graduation, there are so many opportunities to volunteer and learn from various organizations, businesses and bright people within the Fox Valley. Pick an area of interest and see if there are opportunities to learn more about how things work. For example, I was interested in the Emergency Shelter of the Fox Valley. I started volunteering at their facility which lead to an internship with the shelter. Lawrence has an excellent Independent Study program, so I continued learning more about the shelter while receiving class credit. I had learned so much through that experience and they offered me a job after graduation! It was an easy decision for them as I already understood what they were all about. That experience enabled me to fill a need within this community and has led to a great career in the non-profit field.
