What was the final factor that made you say "yes" to LU's offer of admission? |
I initially said no to LU and went to Tulane University in New Orleans. Hurricane Katrina made me look for a place to go for a semester while Tulane rebuilt. I returned to Tulane but liked LU better. It was more challenging and I liked the community feel of Lawrence. Lawrence also offered more opportunities in English than Tulane. |
What is the best course you’ve taken at LU? |
I think the best course is a tutorial I did last year with Professor Kaplin. It was great because I got to choose what we read and adjust my course work to my interests. The tutorial was called Dickens and his Women. It was about Victorian domesticity and the Victorian Feminine Ideal. |
What is your favorite part about being a Lawrentian? |
The people. They are what keep you going. And my people always have my back. |

Which is your favorite resident hall? |
Big Exec. It’s something to look forward to. And the rooms are HUGE. It’s like an apartment. If we’re talking about underclassmen dorms, I like Plantz. That’s where I started out and I thought it was great. It’s close to everything and offers some sweet 60’s architecture. |
What is something you wish you would have brought with you freshman year? |
I brought some plastic margarita cups with cacti stems my sophomore year. I don’t know how I survived freshman year without them. Those and my green plastic mugs with shamrocks on them. |
What is your favorite thing to do in Appleton? |
I spend a lot of time at Brewed Awakenings and Starbucks. The Performing Arts Center also has cool concerts and shows. I saw some amazing taiko drummers there a year or so ago. |

If you were a crayon or paint swatch, what color would you be? |
I would be mauve. I know it doesn’t sound exciting. And it’s not. Sometimes the colour repulses me. But I was thinking about the movie Harold and Maude, and mauve rhymes with Maude. |
What is an uncommon hobby you have, and why do you like it? |
I look for ugly ornaments to give my sister. It is hilarious how grotesque and expensive some of the stuff you can buy for a tree is. I think that there must be other people like me that buy it because it is funny. No one else would buy a flying cow fish dripping with glitter and sporting a bell on a red collar for $30. Would they? |
What was your favorite theme party thrown this year at LU, and what did you dress as? |
Beach Bash is always one of the best. There’s something about a basement full of sand and running around in shorts and sandals as it starts to snow. |
