What was the final factor that made you say "yes" to LU's offer of admission?: Lawrence initially hadn't been my first choice for colleges when I was going through the application process, but after I was accepted here, I came to visit campus, and I realized that the community atmosphere was exactly what I was looking for in a University. Additionally, I knew I would have the opportunity to be very involved at Lawrence in extracurriculars because of the accessibility and openness of all of the programs. I enjoyed having a well rounded schedule in high school, and the opportunity to continue that in college was appealing. Probably most importantly, however, Lawrence offered the languages that I was interested in studying, and I knew I would be able to get individual attention from professors and have the opportunity to study abroad, even more than once if I wanted to.
Who is your favorite professor (and their department) at LU? Why?: Professor Kuo Ming Sung of the Chinese department is probably my favorite professor at Lawrence (though it's difficult to choose just one). Being a student in the Chinese department, I have taken the majority of his classes, and they have all challenged me to learn in a way that no other teacher ever has. I also love how his intelligence in other languages and subjects comes through when he teaches classes-I'm fascinated by his amazing linguistic abilities.
What is the best course (and its department) that you have taken? Why?: I really enjoyed taking the Introduction to Film course from the Spanish department because I was exposed to lots of different Spanish and Latin American directors, and I discovered how much I love watching foreign films, and also how much of cultural understanding can be learned through the art that is a foreign film.
What is your favorite part about being a Lawrentian?: My favorite part about being a Lawrentian is that I am able to participate actively in campus life, get to know my professors and do research with them on a very academic and personal level, and have a community of friends supporting me through whatever I do. Lawrence is a great place to be a student and an equally great place to live and thrive.
What is your fondest memory of your roommate from freshman year?: My roommate from freshman year and I became close friends quickly, and so our room became the "hangout spot" for the people on our floor and our other friends. My favorite memories are sitting in our room in Colman on the rug with our friends, munching on snacks and watching youtube videos, laughing hysterically at nothing and just enjoying time spent together.
What do you find most exciting about the new Campus Center?: I really enjoy the candy store in the new campus center, and I also like the ability to look out over the river while I study. Also, the cafe is a great place to meet people and have tea or a late night snack. The overall atmosphere of the new place really makes Lawrence feel like home.
What is your favorite study spot on campus?: Sadly I'm rather boring, I'd have to say my favorite study spot is usually in my room, because I'm easily distracted. I need quiet to study, and my room is usually the best place for that. Sometimes I can get a good vibe going in the Mudd library, though.
What is your favorite thing to do in Appleton?: I like to run in Appleton, and I also really enjoy going to the farmer's market on Saturday mornings to pick up snacks, treats, and sometimes enjoy live music. Going to cafes or out to dinner is also something I enjoy doing on the weekends.
If you were a crayon or paint swatch, what color would be you? Why?: If I were a color, I would most likely be crimson, because I have a very bright, bold, outgoing personality, but I also like to think I can be dignified and put together if I want to.
If you could only eat one type of candy bar for the rest of your life, which would you choose?: If I could only eat one type of candy bar forever, it would definitely be the Milky Way midnight bar with the mint fluff. This candy bar combines mint and chocolate and those are my two favorite types of sweets. The chocolate isn't too sweet and the mint is the perfect balance of refreshing. It's even better refrigerated. I could never get sick of it.
What is an uncommon hobby you have? Why do you like it?: An uncommon hobby I have is watching videos and movies about cars, and going to car shows when I'm home in Minneapolis with my dad and brother. Since I was younger my dad has cultivated an interest in this sort of thing in my brother and I, so now whenever I'm away from home, I'll watch one of my favorite car shows to feel less homesick.
What is something LU helped you learn about yourself?: Coming to Lawrence has helped me learn a lot about my independence and my interests academically and socially. It has also helped me learn how to balance my life and live it in a more well-rounded manner, and that trying new activities and being in new situations is good, and really all a part of growing up. It has also taught me how to make connections with other people and to continue to keep pushing myself mentally and physically to achieve my academic, extracurricular, and social goals.
