What was the final factor that made you say "yes" to LU's offer of admission?: LU was my top choice from the beginning. You know why? Because it was a small liberal arts college in a great city, with a stellar record of making students into better people. As I was making my choice though, a guide that I found really convincing was Lawrence's YouTube page. It made me really stoked to be choosing LU.
Who is your favorite professor (and their department) at LU? Why?: Professor Gene Biringer rocks! He's incredibly encouraging, and he really knows how to examine things in a multidisciplinary way. He also has a great balance between toughness in grading and helpfulness in preparation for an assignment; he loves answering questions.
What is the best course (and its department) that you have taken? Why?: Freshman Studies has to be one of the greatest courses ever created. Of course, being a freshman myself, I don't have the greatest experience. However, I was thoroughly surprised by Freshman Studies in-depth look at all disciplines. If you enjoy reading, discussing, and writing, then Freshman Studies will rock your world!
What one thing would you say is “The Lawrence Difference”?: LU's unique because of the location. There are so few liberal arts colleges that get to be in a city that's not too big and not too small. Appleton is great. Downtown's right next door, and it's not far to get necessary shopping done, but Lawrence is not absorbed in the city either, allowing LU to have a great campus feel without feel cut off from the world.
What is an interesting/helpful fact you learned about LU after you came here?: I was surprised at all of the opportunities to learn outside the classroom while on campus! There are special lectures all the time, and going to music recitals and concerts are a vital part of being a Lawrentian.
What is your favorite part about being a Lawrentian?: I really like being surrounded by so many great thinkers. Yes, it can be intimidating at times when you discover that you're the least knowledgeable person in the room, but then, you realize that just being around such smart people makes you smarter every day.
Which is your favorite resident hall? Why?: I've only ever lived in one. That's Kohler. Yes, it's substance-free. And yes, there are seven floors. However, the rooms are nice and spacious, and the sink in the room is a blessing out of heaven. And, if you're friendly, you'll soon find there are plenty of friends just waiting to be talked to.
What is your fondest memory of your roommate from freshman year?: My roommate is a Waseda student (that means he's a Japanese study abroad student going to LU for a year). My favorite memory is when we turned on music from his computer the first day, and I heard my favorite band start playing. Thank you Residence Life Services (they are really great at matching up the right students!)
What is something you wish you would have brought with you freshman year?: I actually brought this, but it's been the best choice in the world:
What do you find most exciting about the new Campus Center?: The Somerset Room! 24 hour studying space with silence promised. It's not stuffy and enclosed like the library, and people aren't loud like in some of the lounges on campus. It's perfect. Tables, couches, and chairs are bountiful, and the viewer is incredible!
What is your favorite study spot on campus?: Somerset room is a great spot, but during the day, I often head over to the Science Hall Atrium. It's a giant glassed-in space where there are couches, tables, and even a third floor platform for studying. With a cool technological art piece by a LU grad on the wall, the Atrium is definitely one of the best places to study on campus.
What is your favorite thing to do in Appleton?: Go the train tracks! South of campus, crossing the Fox River is a train track-laden bridge, perfect for a sunny day's stroll. It's a great place to hang out without going for coffee downtown or out to the mall. Watch out for holes though!
If you were a fruit, which would you be? Why?: A Starfruit. Because on the outside I may look weird, but on the inside I'm a superstar!
If you were a crayon or paint swatch, what color would be you? Why?: I'd be Macbook Pro silver. Because I simply love my Mac, and it's the ultimate college computer! Makes life so much easier!
If you could only eat one type of candy bar for the rest of your life, which would you choose?: I would eat a Reese's peanut butter cup. Yes it's not a bar, but it doesn't get stuck in your teeth, and it’s delicious!
What is an uncommon hobby you have? Why do you like it?: I am a Wikipedia surfer. The perfect tool for procrastination and a perfect waste of time, surfing Wikipedia brings in the most useless, but fun knowledge ever.
What was your favorite theme party thrown this year at LU, and what did you dress as?: I haven't gone to any! oops!
What is something LU helped you learn about yourself?: Living with your friends in dorms really brings up a lot differences in social life between high school and college. You see people all the time, and I know that at the beginning, I was tempted to hang out with people all the time. At Lawrence, you really have to find the balance between social interaction and doing your work in a way that's different form high school. I think that as a person, I've grown a lot from that adjustment, just because I've had to learn my own limits and to define new levels of self-control for myself.
