Music Education Workshop

The Music Education Workshop is a great opportunity to get to know the music education faculty as well as Lawrence students majoring in music education. By participating in this workshop, you will also be considered for a Music Education Scholarship. Activities begin at 1:00 pm and you do not need to bring any additional materials to the workshop.

Seminar Topics

Towards Performing With Understanding: An Introduction To CMP
What makes for good teaching? In addition to achieving a high level of musical performance, what else is there for those in band, choir, and orchestra? This session will include a conversation in which we explore ways to deepen the musical experience in the ensemble setting: more varied, more interesting, more engaging, more memorable.

Gesture: Bringing A Musical Score To Life
Each participant will observe a short ensemble rehearsal that consists of both singers and instrumentalists. Emphasis will be placed on providing strategies for studying a musical score then communicating the rhythmic, melodic, harmonic, and interpretive concerns of the score. Each participant will have the opportunity to apply these new techniques through conducting.

With Imagination: Teaching With Creativity
This session will focus on strategies for incorporating greater creativity into music teaching. Basic musicianship will be enhanced through the use of kinesthetic movement and solfege. Each participant will have the opportunity to actively participate and teach a brief group lesson.
