Residential Life will be a significant component of your experience at Lawrence University. Lawrence is a required residential campus; the presence of students on-campus for all four years is a vital component to the campus community that Lawrence seeks to uphold.

Just because you’ll be living on campus for four years, however, does not necessarily mean that you’ll be living in a dorm double-room for four years. Many other options exist for students beyond their Freshman year: the opportunity to live in suites or quads, in small houses, in theme or formal group houses (These are assigned to organizations or groups of students with common interests; some current examples include the Computer Science house, the SoundBoard house, the Outdoor Recreation Club house, and the Co-op House), in Fraternity houses, or in on-campus apartment-style housing.

Except for Hiett Hall (a completely upper-classmen residence), all residence halls house freshmen through seniors, and there is no entirely freshmen dorm. Each residence hall has unique features and cultural attributes, and the presence of Residence Life Advisors (or RLAs, sophomore through senior students who act as leaders in the residence halls) will make living on Lawrence’s campus an engaging, and most of all, fun, experience for you.

Each residence hall features the same basic amenities: a computer lab, laundry facility, lounge/study space, an information desk (where you can do important tasks, like buying stamps or acquiring toilet paper), internet access, and a staff of RLAs headed up by a Residence Hall Director.

Here are some details about the different residence halls at Lawrence:

Colman
Colman is on the west end of campus and has Lucinda’s dining hall inside it (convenient for early morning breakfast in the winter).  One of the its distinguishing features is that each room has a sink.  Colman also has a fireplace lounge, courtyard, and a 2nd floor sundeck.

Hiett
Hiett is the newest residence hall and open only to upperclassmen.  It is arranged in suites with private baths in each unit.  Each suite in Hiett controls its own heat and air conditioning.  Hiett has full kitchens, study lounges, and TV lounges on every floor.  Hiett also has its own parking lot open to students through a parking lottery system.

Kohler
Kohler is the substance free residence hall on campus with a mandatory 25-foot smoking halo and is the closest dorm to Downer Commons.  Kohler has uniquely shaped rooms (no right angles!) and sinks in every room.  There are social lounges on all seven floors, each equipped with cable TV.

Plantz
Plantz is the hall closest to the Music/Drama center and library.  Plantz has spacious bathrooms, a lounge with wall to wall windows, and a sundeck on 3rd floor.

Ormsby
Students in Ormsby enjoy hardwood floors and walk-in closets, as well as raised ceilings and uniquely shaped windows.  Ormsby is the oldest residence hall on campus and still has its original exterior stonework.

Sage
Sage has the most variety of rooms within one building.  It has triples, quads and suites in addition to singles and doubles.  The basement of Sage is a huge social room with wall to wall windows, study tables, and game room.  The main floor lounge has a fireplace and window seats.

Trever
Trever is nestled in a quiet neighborhood in the far corner of campus overlooking the Fox River.  Adjacent to Trever is a recreation lawn with volleyball court.   Also next to Trever are two upper-classmen apartment complexes with parking lots.
