Off-campus programs with internships provide a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Lawrence students to learn, explore, and grow as individuals.

There’s much to be gained by interning during your off-campus study:

Lawrence London Centre – London, England

The London Centre is Lawrence’s most popular off-campus program
London is known to the world as a cosmopolitan centre of artistic, financial, and intellectual activity, which makes it a city ripe for most any internship interest
Examples of past placements: British Museum, St. Gabriel’s Primary School, English Touring Theatre, Medical Aid for Palestine, Centre for Molecular Biology and Infectious Diseases at Imperial College, USA Today, Her Majesty’s Court Service, Esprit GB Limited, Henley Media Group, Labour Party, Respect Coalition, Gate Theatre, and Somerset House Museum
Students spend approximately 20 hours per week at their internship placement.
The internship is accompanied by a seminar course.

Québec, Canada – Québec Seminar and Internship

Students participate in a 4- to 5-week internship through this term of intensive language instruction and interning. In the weeks of interning, students work full-time in business, governmental, or non-governmental organizations
Previous French language study is required
Offered Fall term

IES (Institute for the International Education of Students) Santiago, Chile

Internships in the arts, community development, education, government, heath studies, social work, sociology, or psychology
Internships have a strong academic component - students must take a seminar class that introduces them to the legal, social, and cultural aspects of the Chilean work environment
Internship placements are determined by a supplemental application, may be competitive, and placements cannot be guaranteed in advance

MSID ( Minnesota Studies in International Development) Ecuador or Kenya

All students have internships that are integrated through the program
Interns work a minimum of 25 hours per week. Students studying abroad for a semester have a 6-week internship while students studying abroad for an academic year have a 15-week internship
Typical internship placements are in: public health, women's groups, small business development, environmental protection, education, sustainable agriculture, social services, community organizing
These internships are grassroots and immerse you directly and personally in the social realities of the poorer strata of the local population

IES European Union – Freiburg, Germany and Brussels, Belgium

Offered in two locations: Freiburg, Germany, and Brussels, Belgium
Freiburg - Internships are available in government agencies, political parties, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs),
Brussels - Acquire valuable work experience through a placement in business or political science, gain insight into the workings of EU organizations in Brussels, attend meetings and activities with representatives and employees of EU organizations, lobby groups, and businesses
IES European Union internships take place for six to eight weeks after the IES EU semester
Interns work five full days each week
The internship is accompanied by a seminar course

IES Berlin, Germany – Language and Area Studies

Internships are available in art, business, social and educational organizations, theatre, politics, history, mass media, and teaching
The internship is accompanied by a seminar course

IES Freiburg, Germany

Internship opportunities are offered with government agencies, political parties, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), theaters, hospitals, advocacy groups, schools, environmental organizations and volunteer organizations
The internship is accompanied by a seminar course
Internship placements are determined by a supplemental application, may be competitive, and placements cannot be guaranteed in advance

IES Vienna, Austria

Internships available in business, Musicology, education, and public service
About 30 hours of internship work in total
Usually requires strong German skills (especially for education internships)

IES Nantes, France

Internships are offered in education and business
Education internships require that the student complete at least four hours of supervised teaching each week
Business internships require that students work about eight hours per week in non-profit associations, local corporations, or regional government

IES Paris, France – French Studies Program

Internships are offered at leading French museums, companies, schools, and non-governmental organizations
The internship is accompanied by a seminar course which includes an academic seminar, tutorial, or directed independent study

IES Salamanca, Spain

Internships in education and social services
Social Services Internships
- Students are placed in Salamanca governmental offices and in social service agencies that work with children and seniors
- Students should expect about 80 hours in total at their placement
- Only offered during spring semester
Education Internships
- Students teach in Spanish primary and secondary schools as assistants to teachers of English as a foreign language
- This requires at least four hours of supervised teaching each week

HECUA (Higher Education Consortium for Urban Affairs) Northern Ireland – Democracy and Social Change

All students have internships that are integrated through the program
Students take classes at the University of Ulster for the first 5 weeks of the program and then participate in a 7 week internship in Belfast or London/Derry which allows students to be directly involved in efforts of social change toward a peaceful future.
Only offered spring semester

IES Melbourne, Australia

Internships are offered by the Faculty of Arts in history, political science, public policy, and sociology
The internship is accompanied by a seminar course
Internship placements are determined by a supplemental application for students of junior or senior standing, may be competitive, and placements cannot be guaranteed in advance

ACM (Associated Colleges of the Midwest) Chicago Programs

All students have internships that are integrated through their entire program
Students work12-15 hours per week for a Chicago business, non-profit organization, or arts group
Placements vary for the different tracks of the program. Urban Studies students work for places such as newspapers, community-based groups, or legal organizations. Chicago Arts students work in an art-related internship at sites such as the Steppenwolf Theatre or graphic design firms. Business, Entrepreneurship, & Society students intern in a Chicago business or not-for-profit organization.

Washington Semester – American University

All students have internships that are integrated through their entire program
Internship placement will be related to the program track the student is in. Lawrence-approved tracks are: American politics, economic policy, foreign policy, justice, and public law
