Ethnic Studies

Required for the Minor in Ethnic Studies

  1. One of two core courses: Ethnic Studies 200: Race and Ethnicity in the United States, Ethnic Studies 210: Expressions of Ethnicity
  2. Four additional courses, at least one for each of two categories — domestic and global — and representing course work from at least two different departments. No more than two courses may count toward the student's major. A student may choose to do the second core course as one of the electives.

    Domestic — Courses that focus on the experience of a major ethnic group in the United States or on relations among ethnic groups in the United States:
    • Ethnic Studies 222: History of the American West
    • Ethnic Studies 240: Sociology of Education
    • Ethnic Studies 241: Ethnicity, Cultural Diversity, and Education
    • Ethnic Studies 321: Race Relations in the United States, 1865-2000
    • Ethnic Studies 330: Indians of North America
    • Ethnic Studies 360: Survey of African American Literature
    • Ethnic Studies 380/381: "Ideal Immigrants"? The German Experience in America
    • Ethnic Studies 420: The American Civil War
    • Ethnic Studies 430: American Indians on Film
    • Ethnic Studies 450: Politics of Race and Ethnic Relations
    • Ethnic Studies 561: Literature of the Harlem Renaissance
    • Ethnic Studies 582/583: Hispanic Issues
    Global — Courses that focus on the experience of ethnicity and relations among ethnic groups outside the United States, or comparative courses that include both the United States and other parts of the world:
    • Ethnic Studies 121: Traditional East Asian Civilization
    • Ethnic Studies 221: Europe in the Age of Nationalism, World War, and Totalitarianism, 1851-1990
    • Ethnic Studies 223: Nationalism in the Modern World
    • Ethnic Studies 230: Ethnography of Sub-Saharan Africa
    • Ethnic Studies 251: Immigrants and Refugees: Changing the Face of Europe
    • Ethnic Studies 320: Empire and Nation in Russian History
    • Ethnic Studies 322: Modern Japanese History, 1868-2000
    • Ethnic Studies 382: The Literature and Culture of Ethnic Minorities in Germany
    • Ethnic Studies 480: Latin American Civilization and Culture
    • Ethnic Studies 481: Spanish Civilization and Culture
    • Ethnic Studies 560: Contemporary British and Post-Colonial Fiction
    • Ethnic Studies 584: Black Cultural Nationalism
  3. Senior Experience — Student may choose one of the five following options:
    a. ETST 695: Ethnic Studies Field Experience (course proposed) – three units. Includes work in the community, such as tutoring on the Oneida Reservation, accompanied by a written reflection on the experience. Must be supervised by an ethnic studies faculty member.
    b. Upper-level independent study in ethnic studies for at least three units, supervised by an ethnic studies faculty member.
    c. Participation in the ACM Urban Studies program
    d. Education 565: Methods, Materials, and Assessment in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
    e. Student teaching in an ethnically diverse K-12 classroom or program
  4. C average in the minor.

No more than two courses used for the minor may count toward the student's major and no more than two courses may be taken from one department.
