"Let us carry her colors boldly, the modest Blue and White," says the Lawrence Alma Mater, and a Milwaukee-Downer song says about that college: "your colors Blue and White, for [them] we'll fight and cheer." Strictly speaking, the current Lawrence University colors are navy blue and white, but you get the idea.

Lawrence also carries forward the tradition of class colors that originated at Milwaukee-Downer College. Beginning in 1914, Colors Day at Downer was the occasion for the transfer of a red, green, yellow, or purple banner to the incoming freshman class, a custom that continues today. At the beginning of each academic year, the Lawrence University Alumni Association (in the person of the director of alumni relations) presents the new freshman class with its banner and its color. In the fall of 2006, the Class of 2010 received as their class color the red that had been in the custody of the Class of 2006 until their graduation in June.
