Situated at the heart of the campus, Main Hall is perhaps the most visible symbol of the Lawrence tradition. Constructed in 1853, it originally contained all the college's classrooms, the laboratory, the library, administrative and faculty offices, a dining room, a chapel, and even living quarters.
During the Civil War, Main Hall was rumored to have been a station on the Underground Railroad to Canada; in 1974, it was entered in the National Register of Historic Places of the U.S. Park Service. It now holds classrooms and faculty offices for the humanities.
